We confess that we have sinned against You, O Lord.

We have valued money over blood.
We decided it is better to have guns for protection at the risk and cost of innocent lives.
We argue for our right to bear arms instead of the right to live.

We have clung to the religion of guns instead of the religion of the cross.
Instead of following the One who gave his life for all so that all might have life,
we have worshiped the gun that takes the life of others in exchange for our own.
We have forgotten that we worship the One who said,
“Those who live by the sword die by the sword.”
Those who live by guns will die by guns, and take out innocent lives with them.

May we become the nation who beat our swords and our guns, and even our tanks and missiles,
into pruning hooks, and solar panels and water filters.
May we learn not to reach for guns, but instead to reach out to help, and learn violence no more,
For the sake of the world.
