Scripture: Amos 9:11-15

On this Sunday, traditionally the Advent celebration of Joy, we recognize that God celebrates the restoration of the people who have been oppressed, marginalized and left out. God rejoices in the lifting up of the poor and the caring of the sick. We are called to bring healing and restoration, hope and celebration for all of God’s people.

In this time when we see people crying out on the streets for economic justice, we need to be reminded that God does desire for wholeness and healing for all people, not just for the 99% or the 1%, but the 100%. However, through the prophets we know that God hears the cries of the poor and the outcast, and calls us to act on behalf of those whose voices have been silenced.

In this season of Advent, we are actively waiting for Christ to come again in a new way. We do not sit by passively twiddling our thumbs, but we reach out to our neighbors in need. Let us not forget that God’s desire is for us to live in the wholeness of life, in the fullness of creation.

Lord of Love, call us into a way of life that is whole and fulfilling, that seeks the well-being of our neighbors and all of creation. Turn us away from our own desires of success and fortune and instead seek the wholeness of our family, community, country and world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
